Financial support
General information
It is generally expected that authors of abstracts scheduled for presentation will secure their own funding for attending the conference.
However, a limited amount of the overall budget of the conference is reserved to assist early carrier scientists in attending the conference. Financial support includes a registration fee waiver and a refund of the Abstract Processing Charge (APC) related to the abstract for which support was requested. Additionally, financial assistance towards travel expenditures may be provided at the discretion of the support selection committee to a maximum of €300.
Furthermore, a very limited amount of the overall budget of the conference is reserved for assisting established scientists from low, lower middle, and upper middle income countries.
- Please note, that the APC is also applied in case of support applications, but will be refunded if the support application is successful.
- Each support award is granted to the contact author for a particular abstract. Should this abstract be withdrawn before the conference or should this abstract not be presented at the conference although the author who has been awarded is present at the conference, the award has to be returned, and the registration fee will be charged to the author's account.
- Awards are non-transferable.
- Only the granted amount mentioned in the financial support email will be paid out to the supported contact author personally during the EGU General Assembly 2016.
Public application
Currently, the European Geosciences Union runs two different financial support schemes:
Early Career Scientist's Travel Award (ECSTA)
This award includes a free registration together with a refund of the APC related to the abstract for which support was requested. Depending on the decision of the Support Committee, additional financial support for the travel expenditures with a maximum of €300 could be granted as well.
Established Scientist’s Travel Award (ESTA)
This award includes a free registration together with a refund of the APC related to the abstract for which support was requested. Depending on the decision of the Support Committee, additional financial support for the travel expenditures with a maximum of €300 could be granted as well.

*Provided parental leave fell into that period, up to one year of parental leave time may be added per child, where appropriate.
Participants from low income countries in Europe are particularly encouraged to apply for travel support as dedicated funds are earmarked for this group. These countries include the following: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey, and Ukraine.
Established Scientist’s Travel Award (ESTA)
Additionally, a very limited amount of the overall budget of the conference is reserved for assisting established scientists from low, lower middle, and upper middle income countries as determined by the World Bank designation of Gross National Income per capita.
Scientists who wish to apply for financial support must be the contact author, as well as the first and presenting author of their contribution, and they must submit an abstract by 1 December 2015. For the submission of an abstract/application for financial support, please enter the session programme, select the part of the programme you would like to submit an abstract to, and study the respective session list. Each session shows its link Abstract Submission. The EGU support selection committee will decide about awarding support to individual contributions by 23 December 2015. All applicants will be informed after the decision.
